Pineapple Express

The term pineapple express has multiple meanings.  It's such a catchy expression that one can only imagine the usage in the English language.  On Maui, there are several such meanings that apply.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESSion Number One

When I ask most people, the first thing they think of when they hear pineapple express is the magical and powerful super-strain of marijuana from the movie of the same name.

I loved this movie.  Pretty much anything from/with Seth Rogen gets me going.  Mix guns and ganja and you get...well, it's wholesome filmmaking for sure.

How does this relate to Maui?  Well, let me just say that Maui has some epic and killer native strains of you-know-what too.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESSion Number Two

According to Wikipedia, pineapple express is "a shorthand term popular in the news media for a meteorological phenomenon which is characterized by a strong and persistent flow of atmospheric moisture and heavy rainfall from the waters adjacent to the Hawaiian Islands..."

I work on the water, and this term certainly seems nautical and applicable to what I and many people do and experience everyday on Maui.  As a matter of fact, the term is so relevant that Blue Water Rafting named one of its three rafts Pineapple Express.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESSion Number Three

If you are ever on Dairy Road in Kahului, you will inevitably see the Mr. Pineapple store above the Shell gas station across from the Akaku Center.  In the parking lot you will find this:

Maui doesn't allow the use of roadside billboards, so this van is a perfect rolling advertisement.  Actually the former shave-ice vending machine and future delivery van for Mr. Pineapple, this brightly painted mobile is sure to get your attention.

Want to taste real Maui Pineapple?  I'm not talking about the stuff sold in a can at your local supermarket.  Stop by Mr. Pineapple on your way back to the airport and they have various types of ready packed, airport certified Maui-grown pineapples bred for high sugar and low acidity.

I tried an organic Kapalua Gold pineapple from Kapalua Farms, and I'm not joking, it was like biting into a ball of sugary nectar - no sourness or pucker factor whatsoever.

Here is the specimen sitting on the kitchen counter.

Here it is just before I went in for the kill:

PINEAPPLE EXPRESSion Number Four

I went up to Hailemaile where Maui Pineapple Co. keeps their fleet of buses (next to Hailemaile General Store).  I'm not absolutely sure who these buses transport, but I believe they move pineapple workers to and from the pineapple fields.

There you have it folks, Pineapple Express on Maui.  If anyone finds other examples of the term, I'd love to hear about it.
